Food & Drink Croatia
Due to its diverse historical and cultural roots, Croatian cuisine is quite varied. It includes, in addition to fish and meat dishes, hearty soups, ham, bacon and cheese, as well as local wine and herbal schnapps (travarice). Mediterranean cuisine, with many herbs and Italian influences, is typical for Dalmatia and Istria. On the other hand, well-seasoned Hungarian specialities influence Slavonian cuisine, and there are many meat and game dishes, goulash, and stews. In the north, the capitol Zagreb is well known for its desserts and dumplings. In central Croatia and the Croatian hill country you can find Ottoman influences with roast specialities and homemade cheeses. Ćevapčići, a favourite and widespread dish of grilled mince rolls, that are typically made from beef, but are also occasionally made of pork, often grace Croatian menus. Another famous dish is Ražnjići, typically two kebabs of grilled pork with fried potatoes. Stews such as goulash and desserts such as pancakes can be found nearly everywhere.
