Culture Denmark
Due to its location with only one direct land border with Germany in the south, as well as its many islands, Denmark has demonstrated a strong association with sea travel since its earliest history. Additionally, Denmark is home to three world cultural heritages, including the Roskilde Cathedral, Scandinavia’s largest church, the Kronborg Palace in Helsingør on the island of Zealand and the 10th century Jelling rune stones. Annually held cultural festivals in the film and music areas, such as the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and the Roskilde music festival, are great attractions for music enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. One of the most famous Danes is author Hans Christian Andersen, who made a great contribution to the world with his fairy tales “The ugly duckling”, “The little mermaid” or “The princess and the pea”. The novel “Out of Africa” by Denmark-based Karen Blixen was even filmed by Hollywood. Composer Carl Nielson and architect Jørn Utzon, who designed the famous Sydney Opera House, are among Denmark’s internationally famous representatives. The constitutional monarchy is represented by Queen Margarete II, whose family enjoys great esteem from the public.
