Food & Drink Denmark
Danish cuisine is more diverse than many people think, and offers many specialities in addition to the famous Smørrebrød. Of course fish dishes play an especially large role in Danish cuisine, which are deliciously and variedly prepared using local fishes such as cod, sole or herring. Pickled "Graved Lachs" is among the country's famous fish specialities. Danes also enjoy consuming meat, and Denmark is famous for its large selection of sweets. In addition to "Rote Grütze", which is often eaten with milk or vanilla, there are also exceptionally popular culinary delights such as fancy cakes, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and lebkuchen. Coffee and various Danish beers are at the top of the drink list. After a savoury meal, Danes like to enjoy an Aquavit, a schnapps made from caraway and spices. Gløgg, a Scandinavian mulled wine made from red wine, corn spirit or vodka and various spices, is sipped especially at Christmastime. Due to high taxation, alcohol is generally more expensive than in other European countries. A shared evening meal ("Middag") is highly valued among the Danes, and is generally consumed around 18:00.
