The numerous seaside resorts wound along this bizarre coastal landscape remind one of an illustrious past. Palatial 17th century villas can be found in nearly every coastal town, as well as the odd casino or two. After a relaxing day at the beach, the larger resorts such as Biarritz or Ondres attract visitors to stroll among their many chic boutiques or colourful markets of all kinds. The Côte d’Argent, the silver coast, which stretches from the mouth of the Gironde to the Adour at Bayonne, owes its name to the glittering sea. The endless, 250 km long beaches, with their powerful surf, don't just attract beach bathers, but also water sports fans. The coastal resort Biarritz, where Napoleon III went on holiday with his Empress Eugenie, still radiates a glamourous flair of long forgotten times. Clinging to the rocky, Basque coasts, the townscape is characterised by a blooming sea of hortensias, majestic buildings and chic shops. About 2,000 annual hours of sun bath the main beach Grand Plage, and due to its rawness and continuous waves, the sea here is also excellent for surfing. From the beach, one has a wonderful view of the legendary Hotel de Palais, where a drink at the bar is a must. In addition to beach life, Biarritz offers quite a bit of culture: museums, exhibitions, festivals and open-air concerts attract guests above all in the summer months. Sports enthusiasts won't be short-changed, though. For example, Biarritz boasts one of the oldest golf courses in Europe.
