The painterly Lago Maggiore stretches from the southern chain of the Alps to the edge of the Po Valley. 80% of the lake is located in Italy, and the other 20% in Switzerland. With a length of 66 km and a width of up to 10 km, it is the second-largest lake in Italy and one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country.
Despite its popularity with tourists, it hasn't lost any of its originality: numerous traditional mountain villages and wonderful landscapes characterise the region. At your leisure, you will find idyllic hiking and cycling paths, lovely beaches and sensational cultural treasures around the "long lake", framed by impressive mountains. Stresa is situated on the western bank of Lake Maggiore on the Borromean Gulf. The resort offers a wonderful view of the three Borromean Islands. These have such lovely names as Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori, and offer both lovely palaces and botanical gardens. The glamorous resort with its picturesque old town has become one of the favourite bathing resorts in Europe, due to its particular Belle Epoque charm. The elegantly arranged gardens and parks around the magnificent villas are very attractive, with the park around Villa Ducale being especially distinguished. The lovely landscape and terrific view attracted famous poets and artists. This particular atmosphere can still be felt today.
